Reimagining Care/Work Policies

Sophie Mathieu is Assistant Professor at the École de politique appliquée at Université de Sherbrooke and a feminist political economist. Her research focuses on social reproduction, family policy, gender (in)equality, and work-family (im)balance. Sophie is the author of Égalité, fécondité et maternité : Le soutien aux familles au Québec (PUM, 2023), and has published in French and English on the demotherization of care work, the evolution of Québec’s childcare model, and social inequalities in access and use of parental benefits. She is also a frequent contributor to print and broadcast media on issues related to childcare and parental benefits in Québec and has authored dozens of op-eds and commentaries.

Deeply committed to collaborative research and knowledge mobilization, Sophie values working in partnership. She collaborates regularly with both the Québec and federal governments, as well as with numerous community organizations, to improve access to family policy supports. She is a member of the International Network on Leave Policies and Research, and since 2022, has served on Canada’s National Advisory Council on Early Learning and Child Care.
