Gordon Cleveland and Susan Prentice on the shortage of child care spaces in Canada
A new report from Statistics Canada says child care was more affordable across the country in 2023, but parents are having a harder time finding it. Meanwhile, the proportion of parents who reported having difficulty finding available child care increased to 62 per cent in 2023 from 53 per cent in 2019.

Andrea Doucet participated as a panelist in the Oxfam Report Launch Event
On June 13th at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, ON, Andrea participated in a panel discussion with Lauren Ravon (Oxfam Canada) and Bilan Arte (Canadian Labour Congress) in the Oxfam Report Launch Event. The report is based on Oxfam’s Care Policy Scorecard and focuses on actions at the federal level. The event was attended by researchers, advocates, and Karina Gould, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and included a discussion on what’s needed and missing from Canada’s policies around care.

This report examines the availability of child care spaces by postal code across the country and finds child care deserts to be widespread: there were an estimated 759,000 full-time licensed spaces for younger children across Canada in centres and family child care homes in 2023. Of the 1.97 million younger children who might be using those spaces, 48 per cent live in child care deserts.
